Why you need a firewall for your computer

Firewall software is a must for all computer users to keep the desktop safe. A lot of people are not aware of the risks involved in not having firewall software installed in their laptop, which means they do not understand what the software really does. They think it is a technical aspect and not necessary for a personal desktop or laptop.

Desktop firewall software is one of the best ways you can protect incoming and outgoing data. Basically, this software filters data through the various access points, which are known as ports. Since each software package has its own rules as to how to deal with incoming and outgoing data, you won’t have to customize your software in order to protect your PC. Of course, you can always do so if you desire.

The firewall software helps in the controlling of e-mail programs, instant messengers, automatic updates and practically any program of daily use. The firewall will begin to analyze the traffic or data and judge if there is any malefic threat to your computer and if it finds to be so, it would not allow that data to have an access to your computer. The firewall software performs equally well irrespective of the fact that you are browsing over the Internet or on a local area network at your home-cum-office or even a wider area network of a big company.

One example of when you are infected with a virus, spyware, malware, or adware would be a pop-up window. This window may occur while you are browsing or it may come through e-mail, but when you try to close the pop-up window, it will continue to “pop-up” on your screen.

These are malicious type of attacks, which appear in a pop up window and ask you to enter your credit card details in which identification mark is absent. This is totally a fake one which appears to steel your confidential information. So because of this type of incidents you must have firewall software, which will block such intrusions. This also blocks the misused ports.

If the only thing you’re using to protect your PC against possible attacks is an antivirus package, odds are you’re not completely protected. Yes, an antivirus program helps, but you should also seriously think about getting firewall software. Also, you should bear in mind that it’s always best to back up any information you think is important enough to protect.

You should probably back up your computer files every day or every week. Then you can’t lose your information when a virus or other malady makes its way through your firewall and anti-virus setup. In the current state of the world anything can happen so we have to watch out for it wherever we can. Therefore, it pays to protect yourself.
