Is Your Computer Running Slow?
When the computer starts running slow, most of us start looking for a replacement. This is especially true in the business world, where most firms buy new computers every couple of years. But in this article I’m going to tell you about the Windows registry, how it can become corrupted (and slow down your computer) and what you can do about it.
The registry is a database in Windows that stores lots of configuration options for different programs, including the operating system and hardware drivers. It is full of millions of records, and is something that you hardly ever need to deal with directly as a user.
It’s possible for the data in the registry to become corrupted, or incorrect. This can happen when you shut down the computer incorrectly, especially if there is a power cut or another reason that makes the computer suddenly shut down.
Another source of registry corruption is sloppy programming by application developers. When software contains bugs, this can lead to damage being caused to the registry, and this can lead to all kinds of problems down the road. Often, this occurs when software is installed or removed, although it can happen at any time.
There are several different ways that this corruption can occur, but once it does, it tends to lead to further corruptions and degraded system performance that continues to worsen over time.
Some of the errors are completely harmless, and have no visible effect to the computer user. Other times, the result can be decayed performance and even worse effects.
Even worse, your entire computer could become unstable if the operating system is damaged. This means that the whole computer will crash or refuse to start. This is extremely frustrating, and can make you think that your computer is completely broken.
If your computer ever crashes to the “blue screen of death,” then registry errors are a likely cause. Unfortunately, by the time it gets this bad, you will often find that the only solution is to reinstall Windows.
To prevent things from getting this bad, it is strongly recommended that you run specialised software to scan and repair the registry and other system files. Doing this regularly can go a long way to making your computer faster and more stable.
